Slovensky Kopov History

The Slovensky Kopov (which can be translated to Slovakian scent hound) is a typical tracking dog. As the name suggests, the breed originates from Slovakia. Its origin is uncertain, some suggest that it was bred by Czech and Slovakian breeders after the 2nd World War from the local “Black and tan coonhound”, whilst for example the American Kennel Club originates the breed from the 1870s. The name “Kopov” is derived from the Hungarian word “kopó” meaning scent hound.
In 1963, the FCI (FEDERATION CYNOLOGIQUE INTERNATIONALE) accepted the Slovensky Kopov as a hunting dog of the scenthound type. The main characteristics of the Slovakian Kopov's appearance are defined by its short, close-fitting coat which is black and tan colored. They are medium-sized and they weigh around 15-20 kilos.

The Slovensky Kopov was bred to be the perfect breed for wild boar hunting. Like all tracking dogs, the Slovensky Kopov is also a well-built, muscular breed with perfect abilities to orientate and to guard. The breed is especially hard to train at a young age, they can be headstrong and can sometimes behave crazy. Male dogs need even more attention. However as they reach adulthood their hunting instinct comes alive and their abilities to hunt, trail, and find wild animals make them a perfect hunting companion. These characteristics also make them a hardworking breed and they are also known for their courage and great endurance. Despite the breed’s ability to be difficult, the Slovensky Kopov is a very common companion in its originating area and they are also slowly being recognized by the rest of the world. Providing them a lot of playtime and exercise will make them a great and faithful companion.
