Podenco Canario History

The Podenco Canario originates from the Canary Islands, Spain. A legend has it that the islands owe their name to these dogs, not the other way around but I guess we’ll never know for sure. It seems like that it inhabited the area even since its inception, and that the word ‘canine’, is evidence. According to researchers, there are several texts that date back to the 16th century refer to the breed, but it is known to the Egyptians since antiquity and is believed to have arrived in the Canary Islands around 1000 BC. Many dog relics were found on statues, engraving, and carvings and can be seen in famous European museums such as the British Museum.

The breed looks like a primitive Greyhound with their lean physique and running ability. However, they come from the Spitz type family and are similar to other Mediterranean hounds such as the Portuguese Podengo of Portugal, the Pharaoh Hound of Malta, and the Podenco Ibicenco of Balearic Islands. They are one of the oldest primitive breeds and have hardiness to match. As the years went by, they began to gain popularity because of their working ability. They were used as guard dogs for houses, herds, and properties, as well as hunting dogs to control the rabbits on the island which have risen to epic pest numbers. Using his hearing, sight, and prodigious flair, he can easily withstand all temperature variations, making him suitable for hunting at night and at the crack of dawn. Furthermore appreciating the dog’s speed and quickness in dispatching the pest, they have been considered a valuable asset. However, the appreciation did not happen everywhere as some locals treated this dog disgustingly, often killing them and their puppies once hunting season was over. The breed almost went extinct due to several other reasons as well, for example in the 18th century they were used for dog fighting for years until Spain finally banned it. However, the Podenco Canario has managed to survive until today, which is a credit to their tenacity for survival. Although officially they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are listed among the Primitive Types – Hunting Dogs section, credited as being direct descendant from the ancient Pariah type of dogs, that came from the ancient lands of Egypt and North Africa.

Overall, in addition to his hunting qualities, the breed also has excellent attitudes as a companion dog, suitable for all types of families.
