Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen History

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is one of the many varieties of the French hounds that were developed multiple centuries ago. Historical evidence suggests that the breed can be traced back to the 16th century. The PBGV’s name is descriptive in French with the words; “petit” meaning small, “basset” meaning low to the ground, “griffon” meaning wire-haired, and “vendéen” referring to the part of France where the breed is originated from. Vendéen is an area of France which is on the country’s coast and is known for being a tough environment with a lot of thick underbrush, brambles, and rocks. The dogs’ rough coat was purpose-bred in order to protect them from these harsh natural surroundings. Even the rakish eyebrows, beard, and mustache were not created to increase their cuteness, but in order to protect sensitive areas of their face from thorns and thicket.

Despite the fact that the breed had been existing for centuries, breeders did not standardize the breed type until the late 1800s, and at that time they were called the Basset Griffon Français. Paul Dezamy, the first president of the newly formed Club du Basset Griffon Vendéen of France, in the early 20th century, created a standard description for the breed. However, this early standard both included the Petit and the Grand Basset Griffons since they both came from the same litters at the time. In 1909, the two sizes were finally got separated; a 13-15 inches tall and a 15-17 inches tall type of Basset Griffon. Hubert Dezamy, the grandson of Paul Dezamy, and the third president of the Club du Basset Griffon Vendéen of France rallied support to forbid the crossbreeding of the Petit and the Grand Basset Griffons, because of this recent interbreeding, litters today may still include puppies that have characteristics of both Grand and Petit Bassets.

Along with 27 other hound breeds, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is bred in France even today for their original purpose; to hunt game by scent. The variations in sizes within each breed allowed them to hunt different prey. The smallest among these 27 was the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, and it was created for the purpose to hunt hare and rabbit, while the largest, Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen, was used to pursue reindeer and wolves.

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen made its debut in New York City in the United States in 1992. The breed’s club in America, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Club of America was formed and founded at the AKC Show in Philadelphia in 1984. Not much later, by the end of 1985, the club’s membership had quickly grown from 11 to 50 members, because the breed found its fanciers overseas too. In 1991, the breed received full recognition by the AKC (American Kennel Club) and the PBGV was entered into the Hound group at that time.
