Mioritic Shepherd History

Mioritic Shepherd Origins

The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog, or Ciobanesc Romanesc Mioritic in Romanian, is a natural breed that has existed in the Carpathian for centuries, particularly in southern Transylvania, in the mountainous regions near Sibiu and Brasov. Sometimes the breed is nicknamed “wool bear” as the dog is tall, powerful, and furry and it is often confused with the Old English Sheepdog, with which it has many physical similarities. Its exact roots are unknown, although their ancestors are thought to have arrived in Romania around the 13th century with the Tatars who settled in the Danube Delta along the Black Sea coast. Furthermore, during the Middle Ages, some local kings utilized these formidable dogs to accompany their armies. This fueled the legend that ancient cravings that depict battle scenes between the Romans and the Dacians, the native people of the Carpathians, show these large, muscular bearded dogs resembling the Mioritic. However, as these battles took place over 1000 years before the arrival of the dog’s ancestors to the region, it is in fact unlikely that they can claim to have any connection to these feats of arms.

The breed’s job

The Mioritic Shepherd Dog was most famous for being the loyal companion of illiterate peasants and shepherds isolated in the mountains. The breed has been protecting the livestock and the land for centuries. They were used, and are still used today, for hunting smaller animals, herding, and guarding the animals against the many predators that exist in the Carpathians, such as wolves and bears. Even today, many shepherds claim that these dogs can scare away a bear and a popular belief says that it is the only race in the world capable of facing a bear and getting out alive. Moreover, his name is also a reference to his qualities as a pastor, since the word ‘mioara’ means ‘sheep’ in Romanian, precisely the animal that it has been protecting for centuries.

Recognition

Professor Gheorghe Moldoveanu, who was studying the Romanian Carpathian Shepherd Dog at the time, made the first written reference to Mioritic in 1930 when he made a differentiation between the several roman sheepdogs. The National Zootechnical Institute released a description of the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog in 1934, but it wasn’t until 1981 that the Romanian Cynological Association established the first breed standard. This standard was revised in 2002 to meet the requirements of the Federation Cynologique Internationale, who accepted the breed provisionally in 2005, before finally recognizing it in 2015. In the meantime, the breed was recognized by the American United Kennel Club in 2006 and the American Kennel Club did the same in 2018.

Furthermore, the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog population is estimated to be 1000 individuals, however, the vast majority are pedigree and unregistered canines. Despite the fact that non-pedigree dog breed has been illegal in the country since 2015, old practices are slowly shifting. As a result, there is often a dog left field from which a puppy is delivered to the neighbor of the village when a litter is born, rather than a pedigree dog that is purchased from a professional breeder. Although they are still popular in the Romanian mountains, the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog remains largely unknown outside of their home country, despite the efforts of Barbara Fallent, an Austrian-based breeder dedicated to popularizing them in Europe.
