Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund History

The Schweizerischer Niederlaufhund (Swiss Short-Legged Hound), is a breed of dog of the scenthound type from Switzerland. As its name suggests, the breed originates from Switzerland. It was bred from the Schweizer Laufhunde because due to the introduction of enclosed shoots in hunting grounds, the Schweizer Laufhunde became too quick for that ground. Therefore through a planned selection of stock and suitable crossing, they bred shorter-legged scenthounds. The appearance of “nieder” (meaning: low) in its name supports the story.

The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1954. They are small-sized hounds with a short, thick coat, usually colored white black, and tan.
They, however, do not see themselves as small and their personality more than makes up for their smaller stature. They like to be out hunting over different types of terrain, sniffing out the small and large games and if not given enough time to exercise, they can become a nuisance and they can get destructive around the home. Overall, they are friendly, intelligent dogs that have great determination making them a little stubborn. But with plenty of exercise and attention, they can be tamed to be a great family companion.

The Schweizer Niederlaufhund has more varieties, the Small Jura Hound, the Small Schwyz Hound, the Small Bernese Hound, and the Small Lucerne Hound are all different types of the Schweizer Niederlaufhund.
