Cavapoo History

History of designed cross-breeds

Designed crossed-breed have only rea dogs really become more popular in the last two decades, and their names usually sound strange and cute like Chiweenie, Cavapoo, or Yorkipoo. Although these names may sound silly they actually make sense, usually, they allude to the breeds they are designed from.

History of Cavapoo dog breed

Cavapoo is a mix of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Poodles. It has may naturally exist before, but they have been first bred in the 1950s but became popular and become intensively bred by designer breeders in the last two decades. Now it is more popular in Australia and the UK. Breeders wanted to mix the outgoing and calmer nature of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the intelligence and the non-shedding hypoallergenic coat of a Poodle.

Poodles were originally bred to hunt waterfowl, they are outstandingly intelligent. Its history is probably going back to ancient times, Roman and Egyptian statues and drawings are showing figures, similar to modern time Poodles. In the 1400s breeders in France started to produce smaller versions of the Poodle, first the Miniature, then the Toy Poodle. The Standard Poodle for duck hunting, the Miniature Poodle for sniffing out truffles in the woods, and the Toy Poodle was a companion to the nobility and wealthy families. Due to their ability to quick trick learning they were even used in circuses. They help the position of the most popular breed of America from the 1950s to the 1990s. (The American Kennel Club registered their first Poodle in 1886).

The Cavalier is a descendant of King Charles Spaniel. The Cavalier has definite royalty in its blood, having been loved and adored by both King Charles 1 and King Charles ll. It comes as no surprise that the Cavapoo has a royal slightly superior air to their character from their distinctive history. The appearance of the  Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that we know today is the result of the hard work of Roswell Eldridge and breeders who continued his work. In the late 1600s, King Charles Spaniels were interbred with Pug dogs that resulted in a smaller dog with flatter noses, upturned faces, and bulging eyes. But Roswell Eldridge during a Crufts Dog Show in London offered any money for someone who had a King Charles Spaniel with the long nose and decided to clear the bloodline and create the breed an appearance similar to those in the paintings of Van Dyck of King Charles ll and his Spaniels. The recent form of the breed is the achievement of these breeders.
